LAKHIMPUR: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday laid foundation stones of various projects including the new Medical College and Hospital at Dhemaji at a cost of Rs 605.24 crore, performed bhumi pujan and inaugurated projects worth a total of Rs 1,220.21 crore under the 'Bikakhor Babe Eta Pokhek' initiative in the Dhemaji district to bring about a paradigm shift to the development narrative.

The Chief Minister laid foundation stones for an integrated DC Office at a cost of Rs 49.89 crore, District Sports Stadium Complex at Deoribil at a cost of Rs 50.53 crore, a Mini Stadium at Silapathar at a cost of Rs 12.36 crore, upgradation of ITI, Dhemaji and Dhemaji Polytechnic at a cost of Rs 5.03 crore each, construction of a road from Amguri (Lutachur) to Sissikalghar at a cost of Rs 19.76 crore, improvement and upgradation of Dhakuakhana Butikur Telijan Road at a cost of Rs 273.50 crore, construction of a road from Dhemaji Railway Station Feeder Road to Adikolia via Kankobasti, Shantipur and Jamuguri Panchali at a cost of Rs 13.47 core, construction of a road from Dhemaji Chariali to Dusutimukh at a cost of Rs 15.09 crore, improvement and upgradation of a road from Akajan Likabali Road via Gainadi to Nilakh, including an RCC bridge, at a cost of Rs 49.49 crore and construction of 33/11 KV sub-stations at Mechaki at a cost of Rs 12.05 crore, at Joyrampur at a cost of Rs 11.01 crore, at Gali at a cost of Rs 13.64 crore and at Butikur at a cost of Rs 7.17 crore.

The Chief Minister inaugurated a new road from Silikhaguri to Lakhipathar improved with Rs. 8.75 crore, a road from Karichuk Tiniali to Dhemaji Engineering College improved with Rs 10 crore and 33/11 KV GIS Sub-Station at Balijan constructed with Rs 8.66 crore.

The Chief Minister also performed bhumi pujan for two projects, which include construction of a road from Sissikalghar to Deorighat with Rs 18.68 crore and construction of a road from Sonari Gaon to Dizmore with Rs 30.79 crore.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said that the state government is working to transform the image of Dhemaji from a flood-ravaged district to a developed and progressive one. The Chief Minister made a call to shun the culture of bandhs and dharnas and develop work culture and for rejuvenating the social environment for intellectual exercises and creating world-class sportspersons, besides promoting indigenous culture and agriculture and other spheres of the economy in the state.

Highlighting future development plans for Dhemaji, Sarma said that the state government would upgrade infrastructure of all high schools of Dhemaji in phases with an expenditure of Rs 7 to 8 crore each. He said that soon a large milk processing unit would be set up at Dhemaji. To support the financially weaker section, 20,000 beneficiaries of Dhemaji would be included under the Orunodoi scheme, besides providing ration cards to the poor left-out families with benefits for free medical treatment up to Rs 5 lakh. Sarma also urged the farmers of the district to concentrate on production of pulses to make the district self-sufficient. He also informed that in order to boost the communication network in the district, the Union Government would upgrade the road from Sukafa Tiniali in Dibrugarh up to Oyan in Arunachal Pradesh via Jonai into a four-lane road.

Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, Health and Family Welfare Minister Keshab Mahanta, MP Pradan Baruah, MLA Bhuban Pegu, CEM of the Mising Autonomous Council, Paramananda Chayengia, CEM of the Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council, Tankeswar Sonowal, president of the Zila Parishad, Mohan Gogoi, CEM of the Bodo Kachari Development Council, Mihineswar Basumatary, and vice chairman of the Housing Board, Subhas Dutta were also present on the occasion.

Later, the Chief Minister unveiled a statue of legendary general of Assam Bir Lachit Barphukan at the DC's office campus in the Dhemaji district. He also inaugurated the new office of the district BJP constructed at No 2 Bharalichuk. On the occasion, he addressed the party karyakartas and felicitated senior functionaries of the party.
