GUWAHATI: The state government has started the process for the construction of model secondary schools in tea garden areas in the state in the second phase.

The state government took the decision to set up model secondary schools in phases in tea garden areas that lack educational infrastructure. Students from tea garden areas go to far-off places for schooling. The state government took this remarkable decision when Assam tea is celebrating 200 years of existence in the state. The government entrusted the state PWD (building) to construct the model secondary schools.

The PWD (building) has now started the process to construct 42 model schools with an estimated cost of around Rs 121.06 crore. The PWD (building) has estimated Rs 2,88,24,127 for the construction of each of the 42 schools.

According to sources, the tea garden areas to have such model schools are Doloabari in the Kokrajhar district, Kokrajhar in the Kokrajhar district, Amsoi in the Nagaon district, Lakhimijan in the Sivasagar district, Mohokhuti in the Sivasagar district, Deopani in the Sivasagar district, Khubong in the Tinsukia district, Gohain in the Tinsukia district, Ledo in the Tinsukia district, Orang in the Udalguri district, Dharamjuli in the Udalguri district, Fatemabad in the Baksa district, Menoka in the Baksa district, Borgang in the Sonitpur district, Lahorijan in the Sonitpur district, Mahalakshmi in the Biswanath district, Diring in the Biswanath district, Behali in the Biswanath district, Birjhara in the Bongaigaon district, Borthal in the Cachar district, Bahadurpur in the Cachar district, Chengur in the Cachar district, Nagar in the Cachar district, Ladiacherra in the Cachar district, Halkathoni in the Charaideo district, Borahi in the Charaideo district, Khona in the Charaideo district, Ratanpur in the Charaideo district, Basmotia in the Dibrugarh district, Mokrong in the Golaghat district, Rangajan in the Golaghat district, Naharjan in the Golaghat district, Rangagora in the Golaghat district, Rosekandi in the Hailakandi district, Lalamukh in the Hailakandi district, Tuklai in the Jorhat district, Khanikar in the Jorhat district, Mejenga in the Jorhat district, Gabharu in the Jorhat district, Singlacherra in the Karimganj district, Chargolla in the Karimganj district, and Ramani Krishna in the Karimganj district

PWD (building) has already floated tenders for the construction of these model schools.

Speaking to The Sentinel, Tea Tribes and Adivasi Welfare, Labour and Welfare Minister Sanjoy Kishan said, “Tea gardens in the state have no secondary schools. They have only LP schools. This is why the government decided to set up secondary model schools in the gardens. In the second phase, the government will construct 42 schools. In the first phase, we constructed 119 secondary model schools in tea garden areas. Such schools will have classes from VI to XII.”
