GUWAHATI: The per capita income in Assam has taken a quantum leap, and increased to 1,18,504 in 2022-23 from Rs 41,142 in 2011-12.

According to official sources, per capita income is one of the indicators used to measure the standard of living of the residents of a state. The increase in per capita incomes depends on a whole lot of factors. Some of the factors are: level of education, skills of the population, quality of infrastructure, the level of economic development, and the overall impact of various programmes implemented by a state government.

According to sources, for the past few years, Assam has witnessed some sort of change, like the near absence of bandhs and strikes, which have helped boost business activities, leading to outside industries coming to the state and people of the state getting employment avenues. The peaceful atmosphere in the state boosted the tourism sector, letting the hospitality industry flourish in the state.

The thrust of the government on the agriculture sector, together with the system of minimum support prices (MSPs), helped boost farmers' income in the state, the sources said.

Emphasis on skill honing by the government lets the youths of the state get job avenues in the industries that set up their units in the state. The skill of the youth has a direct bearing on their salary packages.

According to sources, parallel to all these developments, the state government places stress on the development of infrastructure. Around one lakh youths in the state got government jobs under the present government in the state. Some beneficiary schemes taken up by the government have also boosted the financial condition of a section of people in the state. The rising trend of per capita income in the state is: Rs 41,142 in 2011-12, Rs 60,817 in 2015-16, Rs 90,123 in 2019-20, and Rs 1,18,504 in 2022-23.

On the contrary, the per capita debt in the state was Rs 13,521 five years ago. In 2022-23, it increased to Rs 26,771.

According to sources, personal income influences consumers' consumption because it increases spending amounts in an employee's pocket. Further, consumers' spending influences the growth of GDP (gross domestic product) since it directly affects production activities in an economy.
