GUWAHATI: Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways and BJP leader Nitin Gadkari has accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of misleading the people of Assam by promising to exempt the State from implementing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).

"The CAA is a legislation passed by the Parliament. It is enforceable across the country. All States will have to abide by the laws. How could Rahul Gandhi assure that Assam will not enforce the CAA if his party comes to power? " posed Gadkari while addressing the media at the BJP's Media Cell office at Khanapara here on Friday evening.

Gandkari who visited the State on Friday to address two election rallies in Dharmapur and Golakganj Assembly Constituencies, however, evaded a directly reply to journalists' questions as to whether the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his current visit to Bangladesh would raise the issue of illegal infiltration from the neighbouring country. He said that the BJP is committed to prevent illegal influx to safeguard the identity and culture of Assam.

Gadkari claimed that roads worth Rs 30,000 crore have been completed in Assam. Sanctions for roads worth another Rs 50,000 crore have been given. At present, work is on for road projects worth Rs 35,000 crore, he said, adding, "Assam will have road projects worth Rs 2 lakh crore if the BJP is voted to power."

Pointing out that "the State can be termed developed only when poverty is eliminated from the State," he said, "the bamboo mission is a part of that effort. The government has approved Rs 1,300-crore for this mission."
