The Rajya Sabha seat fell vacant from Assam with the resignation of Biswajit Daimary. He is the Speaker of the Assam Assembly now. He came out the winner in the Assam Assembly election on a BJP ticket.
According to BJP sources, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal's nomination to the seat is final. Currently, he is holding a berth in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Cabinet.
Given the BJP and its allies' strength in the State House, Sonowal's win is sure.
