Re-merger: AASU, APCC oppose, BJP hails move of Assam Government

GUWAHATI: The state government's decision to re-merge the Biswanath, Hojai, Bajali and Tamulpur districts with their original districts has evoked adverse reactions from the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) and the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), but the state unit of the BJP has hailed this step.

The AASU on Saturday demanded of the State Government to restore district status to Biswanath, Bajali, Hojai and Tamulpur.

In a statement, AASU's president in-charge Utpal Sarma and general secretary Sankor Jyoti Baruah said that the student body would not accept the decision of the state Cabinet. "The AASU will continue to oppose this decision. We demand that the state government should restore the district status of these four districts. The people of these four districts had to agitate for district status for administrative convenience. The government should honour the sentiment of the people and restore the district status of Bajali, Biswanath, Hojai and Tamulpur", the statement said.

Meanwhile, the APCC termed the rollback of the four districts as an illogical decision. APCC president Bhupen Kumar Borah said that it is an insult to the people of these four districts when the popular demand is the creation of new administrative units for development. He further said that the Cabinet took this decision as per its own whims and fancies without discussing the issue on the floor of the Assembly.

On the other hand, the state BJP unit has hailed the decision of the state Cabinet to revert the four districts to sub-divisions of their erstwhile parent districts. It has termed it as a bold Cabinet decision for a better political future of the people of the state.

Talking to the media, state BJP general secretary Lakhya Konwar said, "The state Cabinet took this decision for the interest of Jaati, Maati and Bheti (nation, land and basis) of the state. Keeping an eye on the suggestions of the Election Commission of India relating to the constituency delimitation in the state, the state Cabinet had to bring such changes in the administrative units of the state. It is a temporary arrangement. The state Government will roll back to its administrative set-up as soon as the Election Commission of India completes the delimitation of constituencies".
