GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) has said that there is no dispute between the people of Assam and Meghalaya. Rather, a 'misunderstanding' had led to the recent incident along the Assam-Meghalaya border area in West Karbi Anglong. The AASU has appealed to the governments of both states to iron out the border dispute as early as possible.

AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath, while talking to The Sentinel, said, "The AASU had held a meeting with the Khasi Students' Union (KSU) recently in Agartala. In the meeting, the KSU expressed its desire for peace and an end to the decades-old border issue between the two states."

He further said, "It has been observed that there is confusion among the people residing in the border areas. They do not know if they fall under the Assam side or the Meghalaya side of the border. There is a similar confusion among the local administrations. There are 12 disputed areas along the Assam-Meghalaya border. While significant progress has been made in settling the dispute in six areas, the governments of both states must take steps to resolve the dispute in the six remaining areas as the recent incident had taken place in one of these six disputed areas.

"Both governments must take all stakeholders into confidence and come up with an amicable solution to the boundary problem soon."

Nath claimed that the Assam Government had not taken up adequate development activities along the inter-state border area. "The forest battalions are also working with the minimum basic infrastructural facilities. The Assam Government must accord top priority to resolving the border issues with neighbouring states," he said.
