GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday that the acceptability of any government depends on its ability to ensure happiness and prosperity of the public. Therefore, he said, the government machinery should not resort to red tapism and cause inconvenience to the public.
Addressing the gathering after inaugurating the flyover at Arya Nagar here, Sarma said that acceptability of the government among the public will increase commensurately with decrease in red tapism in the government machinery. He pointed out that the government has made many public services online and 'faceless' with a view to curbing red tapism and it is the duty of the government machinery to ensure that the public gets the intended benefits.
In the context of the government's resolve to curb red tapism, the Chief Minister cited the example of property purchase and said that earlier the buyers had to visit three different offices for mutation, property tax and change of electricity consumer's name. However, the incumbent government has created a single-window system for all three tasks.
Talking about his vision for development of Guwahati, Sarma said that the government plans to transform the city into the gateway of South Asia. Flyovers are being constructed in various areas of Guwahati every year to reduce traffic congestion so that the city can become a suitable regional destination, he said.
Sarma further informed that a ropeway is being planned to connect the Khanapara area with the airport at Borjhar. Moreover, he said, many government offices have been already shifted to the outskirts and others will follow suit to create more open spaces in the city.
A ring road is also being planned on the Baihata Chariali, Sipajhar, Kuruwa and Narengi route, the Chief Minister said, adding that a bridge will be built to connect Kuruwa with Narengi. A 6-km-long flyover will also be constructed from the TC School near Gauhati Club to the SEBA office at Bamunimaidam, Sarma added.
