GUWAHATI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has put the States of Assam and Meghalaya under a 'Red Warning' on Tuesday, advising citizens to take immediate steps to avoid dangerous weather conditions.

In the meantime, the rest of the North-East will be on orange alert or yellow watch.

Over the next 4-5 days, widespread light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy falls is very likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim due to strong southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal to the North-East and the adjoining Indian States at lower tropospheric levels.

Rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms/lightning at isolated locations is expected over Assam during this period, according to the IMD.

Rainfall amounts will generally run 50-80mm/day over those areas during the next five days, and an excess of 100 mm/day is possible over Assam and Meghalaya on Monday and Tuesday.
