GUWAHATI: On International Tea Day today, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma twitted, “For 200 years, Assam ki ‘kadak chai’ has powered the day for crores of people across the world. On #InternationalTeaDay, we reiterate our commitment to our 70 lakh strong tea garden community and celebrate the bicentennial year of India’s national beverage in a grand manner.”
In another tweet, he said, “No child from the tea garden community should have to leave their homes for primary education. In the last two years, for the first time ever, we have built 97 model schools in tea gardens, benefiting over 16,000 children. Now, we are building 100 more.”
The Chief Minister also reviewed a meeting on the progress being made in the new model tea garden schools. He also directed that the location of new colleges and schools be determined by using GIS technology. Education Minister Ranoj Pegu and higher officials of his department were present at the meeting.
