GUWAHATI: Returning Officer and Additional Secretary of Assam Legislative Assembly Dulal Pegu on Thursday issued the notification for the ensuing Rajya Sabha election. The election will be held to fill up a vacant seat for the Upper House from Assam.
The last date for the filing of nominations is February 18. Scrutiny of the nomination papers will be done the next day. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is February 22.
Polls will be held from 9 am to 4 pm on March 1. Counting of votes will be after 5 pm the same day. The entire election procedure will be over by March 3.
The term of the to be elected RS member from Assam will be up to April 9, 2026.
Biswajit Daimary of the BJP collected nomination papers from the Returning Officer on Thursday. He later told reporters that even though the BJP has not officially named any candidate for the ensuing Rajya Sabha elections, the party has asked him to arrange necessary papers and documents to file nominations. "If everything goes fine I will file my nomination papers on Monday. Other parties are not yet clear about fielding candidates for the ensuing RS elections," Daimary said.
Assam has seven RS seats. A seat became vacant on November 21, 2020, following the resignation of former BPF (Bodoland People's Front) member Biswajit Daimary. He subsequently joined the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party).
However as on date, the 60-member Assam Assembly has 118 legislators – 60 of the BJP, followed by 19 from the Congress, 14 from the AIUDF (All India United Democratic Front), 13 from the AGP (Asom Gana Parishad), 11 from the BPF, and one Independent member.
