GUWAHATI: Tiger sightings have become an added attraction for tourists at the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve. The one-horned rhino continues to top the list of the most precious sightings in the National Park.

Kaziranga National Park (KNP) is closed during the monsoon. However, the upsurge in tiger population in the national park makes some travellers see tigers passing by the National Highway 37 that runs along the national park. On the night of August 6, a few travellers saw a Royal Tiger crossing the National Highway-37 near the KNP.

According to KNP sources, at around 10.10 p.m. on August 6, a Royal Bengal Tiger was seen on the camera while crossing NH-37 at Pub-Hadibari in the Kohra Range of the national park.

Sources further said that Royal Bengal tigers often cross the national highway at this spot to go to the Karbi hills and back.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also tweeted a video of a Royal Bengal Tiger crossing the National Highway 37. In his tweet, the Chief Minister said, “The Royal Bengal Tiger was spotted crossing NH-37 at Pub-Haldibari, which is a part of the animal corridor in Kaziranga National Park, two nights ago.”

According to the KNP authority, as per the last tiger status report, 2022, the National Park has 136 Royal Bengal Tigers. However, they feel that the Royal Bengal Tiger population has surged in the park now with the sighting of Royal Bengal Tigers in the Biswanath addition of the National Park.
