Sankardev Award to Burha Xattriya of Barpeta Xatra Basistha Dev Sarma

GUWAHATI: The State government will hand over the national-level 'Srimanta Sankardev Award-2017' to Burha Xattriya of Barpeta Xatra Basistha Dev Sarma at a function in the city on September 26.

He has been selected for his contributions to the neo-Vaishanvite (Xattriya) culture of Assam. The award comprises Rs 5 lakh, a golden memento and a citation. The Cultural Affairs Department confers this award after every three years.

Burha Xattriya Basistha Dev Sarma was born at Sundaridiya of Barpeta in 1938. He became the 'Deka Xattriya' of Barpeta xattra in 1993; and took charge as the Burha Xattriya of the Xatra in 2007.
