Say no to T-shirts and jeans in official functions

GUWAHATI: T-shirts and jeans do not come under what the State Government treats as formal dresses for public servants in official functions and VVIP programmes. Officials attired in T-shirt, jean etc., cannot attend such functions from now. If any official violates this 'dress code', he will face suitable action.

The State Chief Secretary said in an order issued on May 5, 2022 that "it is observed that some of the officials engaged in duty during VVIP visits and government functions attend duties with casual dresses, which is unbecoming of a public servant."

The order further said, "To maintain the high standard of conduct, dignity and decorum of the events, the officials engaged in duties are required to maintain a neat, clean and formal appearance that is appropriate for the events. Police personnel, medical and paramedical staff engaged in official duties, during such events, should strictly don the uniform prescribed for them."

The order also said that "any violation in this regard would be viewed seriously and suitable action would be taken against the erring officials by the authorities concerned".

According to official sources, though there is no formal instruction, a proper dress code in duty comes under professional etiquette. However, the government sometimes faces embarrassing situations when a section of officials without attired in formal dresses attend VVIP functions.

Even former Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami had to appeal to the legislators to attend the House in formal dresses.

During the tenure of Tarun Gogoi as the Chief Minister, the Assembly Ethics Committee did recommend in its report that the legislators should not attend the House in casual dresses. The committee also requested the Speaker to ensure the implementation of the recommendations.
