GUWAHATI: For the safety and security of students, the State Transport Department has imposed some new rules on the plying of school buses in Guwahati. The department acted to comply with a court ruling in this regard.

According to the new rules, school buses will no longer have unrestricted passage. They will have to adhere to the court-mandated regulations. Each school bus will have a female security guard, aligning with the National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights’ policy. The installation of CCTV cameras is a must on each school bus for the safety of students.

According to sources, the enforcement staff will no longer have mercy on school buses that do not adhere to the rules meant for them. They said that some school buses did not adhere to rules enforced by the department earlier. “However, from now on, they have to follow the rules and regulations meant for them in letter and spirit. We won’t have mercy on them any longer in case of violation of rules,” an enforcement official said, adding that anyone violating rules would have to cough up a heavy penalty, and the driver might end up getting his driving licence cancelled. School bus accidents are a common phenomenon in Guwahati, often due to negligence on the part of drivers.
