GUWAHATI: Many schools and colleges have failed to reopen their higher classes due to the lack of Covid-19 vaccination among students.

The Assam Government recently issued SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) directing the educational institutions to restart offline classes for the final-year students of higher secondary, graduation and post-graduation from September 6. The Health Department has strictly instructed the educational institutions that barring those below 18 years none would be allowed to enter the campuses without receiving a single dose of anti-Covid vaccines.

Classes, I to XI, the first seven semesters of graduation and first-year students of post-graduation are still continuing with their online classes. More than a week after the government's instruction many schools and colleges are yet to restart offline classes due to an inadequate number of vaccinated students. The number of such institutions is quite high in Guwahati.

"Less than ten students of Class XII have received the vaccine doses. The majority of students are yet to complete 18 years and so they cannot take the vaccines. Under such circumstances it is not feasible and practically restart offline classes for Class XII students," a teacher at Don Bosco School, Pan Bazar said.

Cotton University is also facing difficulties in restarting the offline classes for the final-year graduation and post-graduation students. "Many students are yet to be vaccinated. Until and unless all students are vaccinated conducting regular offline classes may not be possible," a teacher of the university said. The same is the situation in many other leading institutions. Assam closed its schools and colleges in April when the second wave of coronavirus pandemic was reported.
