Seat Reservation Can’t Safeguard Locals: Prabajan Virodhi Manch (PVM)

GUWAHATI: Prabajan Virodhi Manch (PVM) convener Upamanyu Hazarika has said that the BJP has won two elections only on promises, and on the eve of the third election the people of Assam have got just a committee to implement Clause 6 of the Assam Accord.

Talking to the media in Guwahati on Thursday, Hazarika said that this committee is to decide seat reservation for the indigenous people of Assam. “However, reservation of Assembly seats without reservation of land, government jobs and other facilities can’t safeguard the indigenous people of Assam. The Assam Legislative Assembly should follow the suit of Manipur Assembly that has reserved land, employment, and other benefits for the indigenous people of the State on the basis of 1951. The State Assembly should do it before January 31, 2019.”
