GUWAHATI: Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Rameswar Teli said that OIL (Oil India Ltd) would shift its corporate headquarters from Noida in Delhi to Guwahati soon, besides giving a facelift to the OIL's 60-year-old Duliajan Township.

Talking to The Sentinel on Tuesday, Teli said, "The shifting of OIL's Corporate Headquarters to Assam has been a long-standing demand from the state. After the Baghjan blasts, the Centre gave importance to this demand. I kept pursuing the issue. Now the deck is almost cleared for the shifting of OIL's Corporate Headquarters to Guwahati.

"It's a tangible step. Since OIL's operational fields are in Assam and other north-eastern states, the oil giant's corporate headquarters must be in Guwahati. It will help the monitoring mechanism of the public sector company work well. Apart from this, in Baghjan-like incidents, the OIL headquarters can take instant decisions from Guwahati.

"The Duliajan oil township is over 60-year-old. Its infrastructures were in sync with the situation prevailing there some 60 years ago. Now the Centre is set to give a new look to the oil township. Dulijan township will now have wider roads. Hospitals, markets, oil colonies etc., will get a facelift.

"The Centre will set up a thematic museum in Guwahati, depicting the tales related to the discovery of oil in Digboi. The museum is to woo tourists, both domestic and foreign ones.

"The Centre will set up an NRL (Numaligarh Refinery Ltd) oil reservoir in a 100-bigha plot at Jalukbari in Guwahati. Another oil reservoir will be in Goalpara.

"The Centre has decided to set up 120 more retail outlets in Assam for better sales of petrol and diesel. The government has also decided to install transformers in 50,000 of the total 70,000 petrol depots in the country, for easy recharge of e-vehicles."

Teli said, "The Government has stressed more crude oil production to lower its import. Alternative fuel like biodiesel is also on the priority list of the Centre. Thrust is on exploration and production of crude oil in Nagaland. The process is underway for OIL to purchase loss-making ONGC's Nazira assets."
