GUWAHATI: The State Government will acquire around 180 bighas of allotted land, including that of Ginger Hotel, Hotel Management Institute, Assam Tennis Association, etc., in and around Silsako Beel in Guwahati.

On March 3, 2023, the State Government asked the Kamrup (M) Deputy Commissioner to give details of lands allotted by the government to various organizations in Silsako Beel. The government issued this instruction to the deputy commissioner after the public raised a hue and cry over the allegations that the government spared a few big fish in the recent eviction drive. The Chief Minister held a meeting with 19 development committees from the Silsako area and assured them that the government would conduct a survey before further evictions.

The district administration has already made around 290 bighas of land free from encroachers in Silsako Beel, where around 900 bighas are still under encroachment.

The breakup of the 180 bighas of allotted land to 17 organizations is: 20 bighas to Hotel Management Institute, 50 bighas to Axam Xahitya Xabha, five bighas to All Assam Tennis Association, five bighas to Cooperative Management Institute, one bigha to Titabor Bhawan, one bigha to Koch-Rajbongshi Sanmilani, one bigha to Madhyamik Shikshak Santha, two bighas to Omiyo Kumar Das Institute, one bigha to All Assam Moitri Coordination Council, six bighas to a high school, one bigha to Assam Tea Labourer Welfare Council, three bighas to Hengrabari Junior College, one bigha to National Institute of Television and Theatre, 50 bighas to Assam Assembly Secretariat Housing Quarters, seven bighas to Tepuram Teron High School, 20 bighas to TV Centre Housing Colony and five bighas to an animal care centre.

The government has instructed all deputy commissioners to prevent people from erecting any structure within 15 metres of water bodies, wetland, rivers, marshy lands, etc., in urban areas and 50 metres in rural areas. It has also asked the deputy commissioners to conduct eviction drives against illegal structures in and around water bodies.
