GUWAHATI: Singapore Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnan said, "India as a whole has tremendous potential, but Assam has something extra, and Singapore will be privileged to play its humble role in it".

The Singaporean Minister said this today at the handing over ceremony of the North East Skill Centre (NESC) to Assam Skill Development Mission (ASDM) by ITE Education Services of Singapore.

Shanmugaratnan expressed satisfaction after the first stage of the partnership between ITE and the Government of Assam in the shape of NESC. He said, "Our companies are keen to look at opportunities for strengthening Assam's connectivity because it has tremendous potential as a bridge between India and South East Asia, Bangladesh and the rest of the region. Green energy and sustainability is another sector that our companies want to avail of opportunities. We also like to play a role in healthcare innovation and training of civil servants."

The ITE Education Services, Singapore and the Government of Assam signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in October 2016 to develop state-of-the-art infrastructure for imparting skill training to the youth of this region.

In his speech, State Skill Development Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah said that "India's connection with Singapore dates back to the Chola dynasty when they shared strong commercial, cultural and people-to-people links. We are immensely thankful to the Government of Singapore for helping us establish the NESC and for coming forward and showing interest in collaborating with Assam across many sectors mutually beneficial for Assam and Singapore".
