GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court has asked the Central and State governments to file their respective affidavits within four weeks mentioning their plans on the revival of Nagaon Paper Mill.

The Officers and Supervisors' Association of Nagoan Paper Mill had filed a writ petition (575/2020) in the High Court and sought its intervention on the fate of the Paper Mill. The writ petition also sought intervention of the High Court in ensuring payment of dues which the Paper Mill owes to its employees. The Association also challenged the order for liquidation of the Paper Mill passed by the NCLT (National Company Law Tribunal).

Hearing the writ petition on Wednesday, Chief Justice (acting) NK Singh and Justice Manish Choudhury asked the Central and the State governments to make their respective plans on the revival of the Paper Mill and forward their plans to the Court.

The State government has already sought a two-month period from the NCLT so that it can take steps for revival of the Paper Mill. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal further said that he himself would meet the PMO (Prime Minister's Office) and the Union Finance Ministry to find out ways to revive the Paper Mill. The State government wants to settle the fate of the Paper Mill without further delay.

Soon after coming to power at Dispur, the BJP-led coalition government promised to revive the Paper Mill. Though the State government took up the issue with the Centre many a time, the Paper Mill has been moribund.

In the meantime, two private parties had come forward to take over the Mill. However, for various reasons those moves failed to take shape.
