SPs must crack down on drugs, fundamentalists: Union Minister Amit Shah

GUWAHATI: Union Minister of Home Affairs (MHA) Amit Shah discussed issues like drug menace, activities by fundamentalists and other issues that have much to do with the law-and-order situation in the state and urged the SPs of the state to crack down on drug peddlers and fundamentalist forces.

According to sources, addressing the SPs (Superintendents of Police) of the state at the Assam Police Training College at Dergaon today, Shah asked the SPs to work with dedication to foil the upsurge in activities by fundamentalists and the drug menace in the state. Stating a link between drug smuggling and terrorism, the Home Minister appealed to the police to go to the last source of the drug business and root it out. "The Government of India is ready to provide all logistic support to make that happen," Shah said.

Shah also inaugurated the newly-built convention centre of Assam Police Training College, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the address of the Home Minister would inspire the police force of the state to dedicate themselves to the service of citizens. He also said that the newly opened convention centre would be an asset for the state police force.

The Chief Minister said that in next six months, the government would take strict measures to cyber security crimes and cyber-economic offences. "The government will not tolerate Burmese supari syndicates, cattle smuggling to Bangladesh and crimes against women," the Chief Minister said, besides laying stress on the conviction rate. "Conviction will convince the public that the authorities take action against criminals," he said.

On the drug menace, he said that the drive was successful in some districts, but in some other districts, the drive is not that successful. He asked the police to keep that in mind.
