STAFF REPORTER GUWAHATI:

Re-verification of NRC in Assam: The State NRC (National Register of Citizens) authority has filed a petition in the Supreme Court of India seeking re-verification of the NRC that was published on August 31, 2019. The petition says that the NRC has errors like the inclusion of ineligible names and exclusion of eligible ones into it. Sources said that the names of several declared foreigners and against whom cases are pending in Foreigners Tribunals have been included in the NRC.

According to the petition, several people who are not OI (Original Inhabitants) have been included in the NRC under the OI category. Original inhabitants get direct entry into the NRC.

After taking oath recently, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma went on record saying that the State Government wants 20 per cent re-verification of the NRC in districts bordering Bangladesh and 10 per cent in other districts. He further said that if no major irregularities are detected in the re-verification process the government will have to accept the published NRC. However, if there are major irregularities, the Government will appeal to the apex court to do the needful, he said.
