GUWAHATI: The State Government has issued a formal dress code for teachers, and the code has no room for any casual or informal dresses like T-shirts, jeans, etc.

The Department of School Education observed that some teachers of educational institutions are in the habit of wearing dresses of their choice that do not appear to be decent to the public at large. According to the department, since a teacher is expected to be an example of decency, especially while discharging duty, it has become necessary to follow a dress code that should reflect a sense of decorum, decency, professionalism, and seriousness of purpose at the work place.

Taking that in view, the department prescribed the following dress code for teachers at all educational institutions:

It said male teachers should attend their duties in appropriate formal attire only (formal shirt-pants and not casual attire such as T-shirts, jeans, etc.).

In the case of female teachers, the department said they should attend their duties in a decent salwar suit, saree, or mekhela-chador and not casual attire such as a T-shirt, jeans, leggings, etc.

The department further said that both male and female teachers should wear clean, modest, and decent clothes in sober colours that should not look flashy. The department strictly prohibits casual and party apparel and said that any deviation from this may invite disciplinary action as per rules.

Talking to the media today, Education Minister Ranuj Pegu said, "According to the school rule book, teachers and non-teaching staff should go to schools in modest attire since the students wear school uniforms."
