SILCHAR: Against the backdrop of the alleged involvement of BJP leaders in the supari syndicate, Minister Pijush Hazarika said today that nobody would be spared. Hazarika is on a three-day visit to Silchar.
Names of Shasanka Paul, a BJP Zila Parishad member, and Bhushan Paul, a panchayat member from Dholai and close aides of Minister Parimal Suklabaidya are doing the rounds after an expelled Hindu Jagaran Mancha activist pointed his fingers at them. When asked, Hazarika said that if the police had sufficient evidence with them, no one would be spared as the government was determined to make the state free from syndicates.
Meanwhile, DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta reached Silchar on Wednesday amid the all-out operation against syndicates. He made it clear that the operation would continue. He hinted that the absconding kingpins would surrender. He further said that the police got the names of some high-profile persons. "No one would be spared," he said.
Meanwhile, in a breakthrough, the Cachar police arrested Dipankar Deb, the prime accused in the Burmese betel nut syndicate, on Tuesday night. Kartik Paul, another big player in the illegal trading of supari, was also picked up. The police intensified operation against the illegal trade in supari, coal, fertilizer. They raided the house of two big players of the supari syndicate, Anjan Paul, in Hailakandi and Samim in Badarpur. The police sealed 20 godowns in the past six days.
The operation against various syndicates in the Cachar district took a significant turn on Tuesday when Amalendu Das, a right-wing Hindu leader of the Dholai area, was arrested on the previous night. Das said that two close aides of Minister Parimal Suklabaidya were regulating the syndicate in collaboration with Dholai police. Amalendu, younger brother of Kamalesh Das, was sent to three-day police custody. He said that Madhya Dholai Zila Parishad member Shashanka Paul and Panchayat member Bhushan Paul had framed him as he had posed a threat to the illegal trading through Dholai.
Suklabaidya, when contacted, said that the police knew who was taking money from trucks coming from Mizoram, pointing a finger at Amalendu.
