GUWAHATI: The Assam government has not yet surveyed 1,750 sq km of its 78,438 sq km area. Taking this 1,750 sq km area as NC (non-cadastral) villages, the State government has started the survey of such lands.

The land survey is underway following a direction from the Chief Minister, The Directorate of Land Records (DLR) has started the survey on behalf of the State government. The Revenue and Disaster Management (R&DM) department has given detained instructions to the DLR for the survey.

The people living in these NC villages have had possession of lands over the years, but they do not have any supporting documents, including land pattas, issued by the government. The previous governments in the State did notice it. They, however, did precious little to survey NC villages.

According to DLR sources, the 1,750 sq km non-cadastral lands in the State have 672 NC villages in 22 districts. The DLR has engaged various agencies for the survey of the NC villages. The deputy commissioners, circle officers and their supporting staff have been extending a helping hand to the DLR in the survey.

The DLR is now forming polygons (plane figures with three or more straight sides and angles) demarcating areas of the respective NC villages. The DLR is drawing the polygons of 466 NC villages now. And it has already formed the polygons of three NC villages in the Dhemaji district – Dhunaguri Ahom NC, Migang Dalung and No. 4 Dharampur NC. The DLR has completed 31.17 per cent of the survey forming polygons of the NC villages.

The polygons will then go to the respective district administrations for a detailed cadastral survey of the lands.
