GUWAHATI: Suspected cases of Lumpy skin disease in cattle have been reported in various districts of the State. The State Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department is closely monitoring the situation.
In the Nagaon district, more than 25,000 cows have been affected by suspected Lumpy disease. A few have also died. State Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Atul Bora visited some areas under the Kaliabor LAC and interacted with cattle farmers and local veterinarians. He directed them to study the suspected cases and to set up veterinary camps.
Already, 12 awareness camps have been conducted and 34 medical health check-up camps have been set up. More such camps are likely to be held. State Health Minister Keshab Mahanta accompanied Atul Bora during the visit. Meanwhile, teams of the North Eastern Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (NERDDL) and the College of Veterinary Science, Khanapara have left for the Nagaon district and they have collected samples to ascertain the exact nature of the disease.
Lumpy skin disease is an infectious viral disease of cattle, which often occurs in epizootic form. The disease is characterized by the eruption of nodules in the skin, which may cover the whole of the animal’s body.
