CONSTITUENCY DELIMITATION
STAFF REPORTER
GUWAHATI: The AASU (All Assam Students' Union) has urged the government to carry out the constituency delimitation exercise in the state based on the report of the high-level committee headed by Justice (retd) Biplab Kumar Sharma. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) did form a high-level committee.
The call from the AASU came close on the heels of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma disclosing in New Delhi recently that the State Government had given its nod to the Centre to go ahead with the constituency delimitation exercise in Assam.
A statement issued jointly by AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath and general secretary Sankor Jyoti Baruah said, "The high-level committee constituted by the MHA has recommendations for the implementation of the Clause VI of the Assam Accord. The report has recommendations for constitutional safeguards for the indigenous people of Assam. Since illegal migration has posed a threat to the indigenous people of the state, their constitutional safeguards are a must. Since political rights are the most important, the high-level committee has some constituency delimitation-specific recommendations."
The statement further said, "The Clause VI of the Assam Accord spells out the constitutional safeguards needed for the Assamese. Since the AASU is one of the signatories of the Assam Accord, we will perform our responsibility. We want the Central Government and the Election Commission of India to ensure constitutional safeguards for the indigenous people of Assam."
