TET Mandatory for Madrassa Teachers: Gauhati High Court

GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court on Monday made the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) mandatory for appointment of teachers in provincialized madrassas in the State. So from now on only, those cleared the TET could apply for the posts of teachers in provincialize madrassas and the government will have to appoint only the TET qualified teachers.

The High Court’s order came after it dismissed petitions filed by a section of candidates challenging the government’s move to appoint TET qualified teachers in madrassas in 2015. The State Government held a special TET for Madrassa teachers in 2015 and 22,000 candidates cleared the test.

Way back in 2012 the government published an advertisement to appoint teachers in provincialized madrassas without TET qualification. The People’s Society, an NGO had filed a PIL challenging the government move and the High Court accordingly stayed the appointment process. Eventually, the government also scrapped its advertisement to select teachers for madrassas and decided to hold a special TET. The High Court has said since the provincialized madrassas are not minority institutions as enshrined in the Constitution, the TET will be mandatory for teachers of madrassas.
