GUWAHATI: The Tezpur Medical College & Hospital (TMCH) has suspended its junior doctor Rakesh Medhi for harassing several female MBBS interns of the hospital.

The service of Dr Medhi has been suspended for the next six months. The accused, who is a postgraduate (PG) student of surgery at TMCH has also been asked to vacate the hostel. The suspension order has been issued by the Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent of TMCH Dr Karuna Hazarika.

Earlier, the Principal of TMCH ordered an inquiry after the reports of alleged harassment of female MBBS students was brought to the notice of Union Minister Smriti Irani, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Assam Police through social media, particularly Twitter.

"Increase incident of female interns being harassed by senior PGs in Tezpur Medical College has been reported, please look into this matter. Many are silent because they are afraid," one identifying himself as Anshul_ka_bhai1 wrote in his Twitter handle.

The Assam Police immediately reacted to the twit and asked the Superintendent of Police (SP) of the Sonitpur district to conduct an inquiry to find out the culprits. The SP of Sonitpur has asked the Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent of TMCH to find out the truths.

In the meantime, the Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent of TMCH has ordered an inquiry and initiated steps to find out the truth. The Principal has also requested Anshul_ka_bhai1 to bring any proof in person or by other means so that strict punitive actions could be meted out to the alleged culprits.

The entire Assam was shocked on May 9, 2014, when a lady doctor Sarita Toshniwal became a victim of the cool-blooded murder by a PG student of the Assam Medical College & Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh. Dr Sarita was murdered when she was on night duty at the AMCH.

"Any kind of harassment on any female MBBS intern or doctor will not be tolerated under any circumstance," a doctor at TMCH said.
