GUWAHATI: The Food & Drug Administration, Assam has prohibited the manufacture, storage, distribution and sale of Bailley, a brand packaged drinking water with immediate effect in the State.

The popular packaged drinking water is manufactured by M/s Udayak Agro Products Pvt. Ltd situated at Kahilakuchi in city’s Satgaon area. The ban will remain in force for 30 days. An official press communiqué issued on Friday stated that the ban has been imposed in the interest of public health under the provisions of Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

Sources told The Sentinel that the Commissionerate of Food Safety has imposed the ban after receiving test reports of samples of Bailley packaged water from the State Food Analyst as well the Director of Referral Food Laboratory, Kolkata. The test reports reveal the presence of microbial contaminants in Bailley packaged drinking water. Fluoride content was also found higher than the prescribed limit.
