GUWAHATI: State DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta has said that this year the focus is on drug peddling as peddlers have reached all lanes and by-lanes in the State.

Talking to the media here on Tuesday, the DGP said, "The Chief Minister has laid stress drugs, peddlers', Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta on drug peddling. Last year, we had our focus on the drug suppliers' chain.

"As many as 618 drug-related cases have been registered in the State leading to the arrest of 1,008 persons from January to May 31 this year. As many as 269 cases were registered in May alone. In 2020, 980 cases were registered to lead to the arrest of 1,652 people."

The DGP appealed to the people not to treat drug addicts as criminals. "Once they're socially outcast, drug addicts turn peddlers. So long there's a parallel drug economy in neighbouring Myanmar, the drug menace is not going to end all of a sudden," the DGP said.
