GUWAHATI: With incessant rains on August 21 and 22 in the Northeast, the situation of floods has deteriorated in a few districts in Assam, mainly Dhemaji. The situation may turn for the worse in the days ahead, with the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Guwahati, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall in a few districts in Assam on August 23 and 24.

According to the evening report of the CWC (Central Water Commission), the Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level at Neamatighat in the Jorhat district and maintaining a rising trend in Dibrugarh and Tezpur. The mighty river is steady in Guwahati and Dhubri.

The CWC report further states that some other rivers in the state are maintaining their rising trends. Some of the rivers are the Subansiri, Lohit, Burhidihing, Dikhou, Dishang, Puthimari, Pagladiya, Manas, Beki, Gaurang, and the Sonkosh.

According to the ASDMA (Assam State Disaster Management Authority), as of date, floods have affected seven revenue circles in Biswanath, Dhemaji, and Lakhimpur districts, affecting 43,884 people in 97 villages. The worst-affected district is the Dhemaji district, where 43,341 people have been reeling under floods.

Meanwhile, sounding an orange alert, RMC said, “Heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely over Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, and Barpeta districts on August 23 and 24. Thin to moderate rainfall will also occur in a few other districts in the state. Choulduwaghat, Jorhat, Hajua, Dhemaji, Sivasagar, North Lakhimpur, Ranganadi, BP Ghat, Barpeta, and Jonai witnessed the highest rainfall in the past 24 hours.
