SILCHAR: Two African citizens – a young woman and a middle-aged man, have been detained by Churaibari police at the inter-State boundary checkpost between Assam and Tripura on Thursday night.

The detention of the African citizens transgressing to Assam from a foreign country through Bangladesh has caused consternation in security circles. This illegal entry is in succession to similar transgressions of Nigerian citizens through this Churaibari check gate which has always been in high focus for the alertness and vigilance against infiltration of persons from other countries including Bangladesh, drug peddlers and also armed extremists.

It was during a routine search operation in night super buses passing through the check gate that the African citizens identified as Ruthrael Andis (25) and Oladipudo Akanezacch (40) were detained from a Guwahati-bound night super bus from Agartala. They did have passports.

However, while the validity of Oladipudo's passport had expired six months ago, Ruthrael did not use her passport for entry to Tripura from Bangladesh. Besides, she failed to give any plausible explanation. Hence, it was totally an illegal entry insofar as the movement of citizens from one country to another country is concerned.

Oladipudo hails from Senegal and Ruthrael is from Kenya – both nations in the Africa continent. After taking them into custody, Karimganj police will be investigating as to how the duo met and planned their visit to Assam through Bangladesh. They were taken to the Civil Hospital for medical examination. After that, the Africans will be subjected to cross investigation, stated a Police source at the border town.
