GUWAHATI: The collegiums of the Supreme Court recommended two women—Advocate Shamina Jahan and Judicial Officer Yarenjungla Longkumer—as judges for the Gauhati High Court.

The recommendation for the appointment of these two candidates as judges of the Gauhati High Court was made by the Collegiums of the High Court on May 29, 2023. On October 17, 2023, the Supreme Court Collegiums scrutinized and evaluated the materials placed on record.

Further consideration of the recommendation was deferred with a view to seeking a report from the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court in consultation with members of the high court collegiums on the suitability of the candidates in light of the inputs provided by the government.

The Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, by letters dated October 19 and November 7, 2023, forwarded the minutes of the collegiums regarding the suitability of the two candidates. In terms of the memorandum of procedure, the judges of the Supreme Court conversant with the affairs of the Gauhati High Court were consulted to ascertain the fitness and suitability of these two candidates.

Having regard to the above and opinions of the Supreme Court’s consultee-colleguaes and overall consideration of the recommendations made by the collegiums of the high court, the Supreme Court collegiums are of the considered view that Ms. Jahan and Ms. Longkumer are suitable for appointment as judges of the Gauhati High Court.
