TINSUKIA/DIGBOI: A joint team of police and security personnel shot dead ULFA (I) cadre Uday Axom alias Uttam Lahon alias Uday Axom in an encounter at Ledu in the Tinsukia district on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday.

According to security personnel engaged in the operation, the slain ULFA-I rebel and seven to nine other ULFA members came from their camp with a design. They were taking shelter in the Malu gaon (MulungPahar) near Titok colliery on an inaccessible track under the Ledu police outpost.

The personnel led by Tinsukia SP Gaurav Abhijit and IGP North East Region Jitmol Doley confronted the banned ULFA cadres. The gun battle lasted for nearly ten minutes. The security personnel killed Uday Axom in the gun battle. The other militants, including Mriganka Axom, fled the scene taking the cover of darkness.

Sources at the Tinsukia SP office revealed that the militants were lookout for an opportunity to kidnap an influential businessman of Margherita, besides targeting the newly-appointed State DGP GP Singh and IGP NER Jitmol Doley for their intensified drive against the militant outfits in the region. The security forces recovered an AK series rifle, IED materials, one backpack, a blanket and medicines from the possession of the slain cadre.

The security personnel cordoned off all the vulnerable pockets restricting the movement of the civilian to avert causalities. The forces intensified their operation to nab the absconding ULFA cadres along the Assam- Arunachal border.

Uday Axom hailed from Jaboka Gaon under the Sonari Police station in the Charaideo district. He was also an IED expert.
