Situation grim in state; several embankments breached

GUWAHATI: The flood situation in the state continues to remain grim today, when a life was lost due to landslides. Union Minister of Health Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya took stock of the health-related issues arising due to the current wave of floods in the state. He assessed the arrangements put in place by the central institutions and agencies of the State government to ensure effective flood management.
At a virtual meeting today, Dr. Mandaviya underscored the need for preparedness of critical care equipment and hospital beds, as well as the availability of clean drinking water in flood-affected areas. He urged the officials to work on a flood management model to deal with the flood situation in Assam, which is a recurring phenomenon. Dr. Mandaviya also assured the State Government of all support from the Centre.
Meanwhile, there has been no letup in the flood situation in the state. The Brahmaputra in Nematighat, the Kopili in Kamrup, and the Puthimari at Puthimari have been flowing above the danger marks. Apart from roads and culverts, the surging flood waters breached embankments at five different places in Darrang, Nagaon, Sonitpur, and Udalguri districts in the state.
While the Puthimari river inundated the national highway at many stretches, waters from the Kopili inundated fresh areas in the Kampur and Raha areas in the Nagaon district. Waters from the Subansiri hydel project have also posed a threat to the North Bank.
The floods have affected over 37,531 people in 146 villages in eleven districts. As many as 19 relief camps and centres are in operation: four in Biswanath, one in Dibrugarh, ten in Lakhimpur, one in Tinsukia, and three in Udalguri districts. The deluge has also affected 45,492 animals. At Dhirenpara in Guwahati, a person named Muktar Ali died when a guard wall collapsed today.
