GUWAHATI: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari is coming for a two-day visit to Guwahati to review the whole lot of national highway projects currently going on in Assam and other states in the Northeast.

Various national highway projects are underway in Assam and other states in the region under the NHIDCL (National Highways Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd.) and NHAI (National Highways Authority of India).

On the eve of Union Minister Nitin Gadkari’s Guwahati visit, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reviewed the NH projects in Assam with the local officials of the Central Government today. The Chief Minister also had a discussion on the itinerary of Gadkari’s visit in detail. According to NHIDCL sources, as many as 215 NH projects involving 4,562 km are going on in the Northeast, including Sikkim. The total cost of the projects is Rs 98,592 as of July 31, 2023. The awarding of a few projects is over. The construction of such projects is to start shortly.

During the visit, Gadkari is likely to lay the foundation stones for a few NH projects. Since the NH projects in Assam are slow-moving, the kind of instruction the minister will issue to the officials and construction companies is something to keep tabs on.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma did take up the issue of NH projects in Assam with Gadkari several times.
