DIBRUGARH: The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) demanded the Chief Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) investigate the urea scam.

The students' body submitted a memorandum to the Chief Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) through Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu today. The AASU alleged that a big racket was going on under the patronage of some district officials.

"Due to urea shortage in Assam, the tea industry has been facing a hard time. Though the Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Limited (BVFCL) is producing urea in Assam, the State has been facing a urea shortage. In 2018-19, the state produced 3 lakh metric tonnes of urea. However, urea is scarce in the market. There's a big racket that should be properly investigated," alleged Aboni Kumar Gogoi, AASU general secretary, Dibrugarh.

Gogoi further said, "The urea produced in the BVFCL unit was smuggled to other states. Assam police recently seized a truck full of urea in the Cachar district.

"We have lost faith in the police. They have failed to unearth the urea scam. We demand the CVC, New Delhi to take up the case and investigate into it," he added.
