STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: The veterinary doctor and cattle ratio in Assam is abysmally below par. Against the National Commission of Agriculture-recommended standard ratio of 1 doctor for 5,000 cattle, Assam has one veterinary doctor for over 17,000 cattle.

Thus the department badly needs veterinary doctors.

The veterinary doctor and cattle ratio is below par as the Veterinary Department did not create any new posts for doctors in the past ten years. According to sources, the State Veterinary Department recruited only 258 doctors in the past ten years.

The Government needs to look into the affairs of the Veterinary Department in the agriculture-based state where cows and bullocks comprise most of the cattle population. The spending of budgetary funds of the Veterinary department is not satisfactory either.

The department spent 63.83 per cent of budgetary allocations in 2020-21, 50.86 per cent in 2019-20 and 59.63 per cent in 2018-19.
