DIBRUGARH: A day after Special DGP (Law & Order) GP Singh asserted that the Assam police would not allow the baahubali (muscle power) culture in the state, the Dibrugarh Police today demolished the two-storey residence of Baidullah Khan, one of the three accused charged with abetting the suicide of animal rights activist Vineet Bagaria. On Tuesday, a police force along with district officials carried out the demolition of Khan's residence located in the Ghoramara Lahowal area of Dibrugarh.

Dibrugarh Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Biswajit Phukan, who oversaw the demolition drive, said that the administration demolished Baidullah Khan's residence as they constructed the building illegally, violating all norms.

The Dibrugarh District Administration had issued a notice on July 8, 2022, to Baidulla Khan. As per the notice, the construction of the two-storey building was illegal.

Talking to this correspondent, Dibrugarh Additional Superintendent of Police (HQ) Bitul Chetia said, "The building was illegally constructed on the road without any permission from the district administration. On July 8, a notice was served, and today we have carried out an eviction drive and demolished the two-storey building of Baidulla Khan."

Thirty-two-year-old Vineet Bagaria, the co-founder of Animal Welfare People, an NGO for stray and abandoned animals, hung himself to death on July 7 at his Shani Mandir road residence in the Dibrugarh town.

Before killing himself, Vineet had recorded a video on his cell phone where he named three persons - Baidullah Khan, Sanjay Sharma and Nishant Sharma - for physically and mentally torturing him for a long time, which, he said, forced him to take the drastic step.

Vineet's father Kailash Bagaria, a chartered accountant, revealed that he had leased out a shop on the ground floor of his residence to Sanjay Sharma 15 years ago. Sharma had later sub-let the shop to Baidullah Khan, who opened a motorcycle repairing shop without his permission. The Bagaria family has been trying to evict the property for several years, but the accused has refused to vacate the place.

On July 8, the police arrested Baidullah Khan and Nishant Sharma from the Lumding Railway Station while trying to flee. Another accused, Sanjay Sharma, is still at large.
