GOLAGHAT: Golaghat Additional Session Court today convicted former Bokakhat MLA Jiten Gogoi, former Thawra MLA Kushal Duwari and three others and sentenced them for two years, besides a fine of Rs 5,000 each. The court found Jiten Gogoi, Tarun Bora, Babu Gogoi, Dambarudhar Gogoi and Kushal Duwari guilty under Section 51(1) of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.

However, the court acquitted all the five of the charges under Section 447/427/353/323/294 of IPC and Section 25 (1B) (a) of the Arms Act.

In default of paying the fine, each of them shall further undergo simple imprisonment for two months for committing the offence punishable u/s 51(1) of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972. The seized Gypsy vehicles along with relevant documents will be returned to their owners. The seized AK-47 rifle with magazine and ammunition has been confiscated to the State, and the other seized articles will be destroyed following the law.

On March 17, 2009, former MLA Jiten Gogoi and former MLA Kushal Duwari and their three associates illegally entered the Kaziranga National Park and fished illegally at the Jia Difaloo river. When forest officials tried to stop fishing in the river, Jiten Gogoi and his associates threatened to kill the forest officials with his AK-47 rifle. Forest officer Dharanidhar Boro lodged an FIR against the five at Kohora Police Station.
