GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the potential of the Brahmaputra must be harnessed for the economic growth of the state and the region without harming its natural course.
The Chief Minister said this at the Brahmaputra Deepotsav festival organized by Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) at Brahmaputra River Heritage Centre here.
He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called for celebrating river festivals in his Mann ki Baat programme. Brahmaputra Deepotsav is in sync with that to make the people aware of the effects of climate change and how to protect the environment.
The Chief Minister said that Namami Brahmaputra and Namami Barak initiatives highlighted river civilizations, and those festivals had achieved their objectives to a great extent. People must join hands with the government to protect the environment by preserving greenery. He said that the government had been developing the riverfronts and beautifying Guwahati city, a press release said.
