GUWAHATI: With 88.49 per cent of Assam's rural households yet to get tap water connections under the ambitious Jal Jeevan Mission and just 3 years left for the deadline to expire, it could be a tough task for Ranjeet Kumar Dass, Assam Minister for Public Health Engineering Department to meet the target set by the Government of India.

Till the first part of May this year, only 7,28,924 or 11. 51% of the total 63,35,015 rural households of Assam have got tap water connections, government data revealed. On August 15, 2019, the number of households connected with tap water connections stood at meagre 1,11,311.

The State plans to achieve total saturation (cover all the 63,35,015 rural households) by the year 2024.

In Assam, the Jal Jeevan Mission is being implemented by Jal Jeevan Assam and monitored by the Public Health Engineering Department.

The Jal Jeevan Mission is a flagship programme of the Union Government envisioned to provide safe and adequate drinking water through individual household tap connections by 2024 to all households in rural India. The programme will also implement source sustainability measures as mandatory elements, such as recharge and reuse through greywater management, water conservation, rainwater harvesting. The Jal Jeevan Mission is based on a community approach to water and will include extensive Information, Education and communication as a key component of the mission. JJM looks to create a Jan Andolan for water, thereby making it everyone's priority.
