GUWAHATI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has asserted that the BJP is contesting the Assam Assembly elections on five pillars – security/respect, culture/civilization, peace/dialogue, prosperity/unity and self-reliance/self-dependence for Assam.

Participating in a virtual interaction meeting with the BJP's social media volunteers and activists at Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra here on Monday evening, Shah said the election in a democracy is a natural process of electing a new government.

"But when it is election in Assam we must see whether the next government could fulfill dreams of Srimanta Sankardev and Lachit Borphukan. Could the government spread the golden voice of music maestro Bhupen Hazarika across the globe? This election will be a fight among the BJP, the Congress and Badruddin Ajmal. Even though the election seems to be a triangular contest, Ajmal is hiding behind the Congress. Now it is up to the people of Assam to decide whether they will vote for the Congress with Ajmal. It is an irony of fate that that Gaurav Gogoi, son of former Chief Minister late Tarun Gogoi who questioned the very existence of Ajmal in Assam, is now toeing the same line with the AIUDF. This election is to build the roadmap for a futuristic Assam. But the Congress and Ajmal cannot build a futuristic Assam," Shah said.

During the interaction function, Shah launched a project – Town Hall – under the title 'Agragami Asom' (Advanced Assam). The Town Hall can virtually connect with some thousands of people.Shah said the BJP would form a nationalistic government in Assam to make the State to connect with rest of the country only through peace and progress.

"Our sole aim is not to make a government and Chief Minister in Assam. Before the independence Assam tops the list of States having the highest GDP. We want to make the State to reach the same mark now. In the last five years the BJP government has made Assam free from extremism, infiltration, corruption and agitation. Such menaces ruined the State during the Congress regime. We have built the foundation for development in Assam and massive development activities have already started. Strong initiatives have been taken to prevent illegal infiltration. A large number of militants have joined the mainstream and surrendered their arms. If the Congress and Ajmal come to power Assam will return to its old days of underdevelopment, infiltration, extremism and corruption," the Union Home Minister said.

Shah said there is not a single case of corruption in the State in the last five years. He said the Centre under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already done a satellite survey to solve Assam's perennial flood problem in the next five years.

"We have cleared encroachment in Kaziranga National Park and stopped rhino killing. Various initiatives have been taken for the welfare of the tea community. Besides the existing scheme of offering financial assistance to various namghars we will launch a new scheme to cover all namghars for the same purpose," Shah added.
