GUWAHATI: AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal has made it clear that his party will field candidates in three parliamentary constituencies in the forthcoming Lok Sabha poll in 2024, in which they will support I.N.D.I.A. (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance). Speaking to reporters in Guwahati today, Ajmal said, “We would have fielded candidates in five Lok Sabha seats in the state. However, we won’t do that. We will field candidates in only three seats: Karimganj, Nagaon, and Dhubri. We have no understanding with the Assam Congress. However, we have good relations with the All India Congress. I have been in the UPA for the past 18 years. Our support will be with I.N.D.I.A. It is up to them to take us into their fold. Our dream is to win three seats in the Lok Sabha poll. If we have three seats without an alliance, who will have importance in the formation of the ministry?”
When asked if the AIUDF would not field candidates in other parliamentary seats, Ajmal said, “That will only help the BJP. We won’t do that. Our stand is that I.N.D.I.A. should come out on top. We are ready to sacrifice for that. We have still maintained relations with the All India Congress. In the last parliamentary election, we lent our support to the Congress in the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency, and that led Pradyut Bordoloi to win the seat”.
Ajmal also met Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on the Assembly premises today. They discussed various issues like floods and erosion, stopping eviction drives in the state, and setting up Haj Bhawan and universities.
