GUWAHATI: Newly-inducted Assam Cabinet Minister Pijush Hazarika on Wednesday said that his top priority as the State's Water Resources Minister would be to deliver on BJP's poll promise of making Assam flood-free. The Minister also took the charge of Information and Public Relations and Parliamentary Affairs on Wednesday.

Listing out his other priorities, Hazarika said that he would direct Water Resources Department officials to get to work and repair the 18 embankments the work of which could not be completed earlier. The floods of 2020 had damaged 24 embankments. Of these, six have been repaired. The Minister said that he would ensure that the work of the remaining embankments is completed at the earliest so that the people do not have to face the fury of floods.

Speaking to the media after assuming office, the Minister said that the Assam government would extend one-time financial assistance to the next of kin of any journalist who passes away suddenly. "Honourable Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has advised me regarding taking this measure for the welfare of the journalists," Hazarika said.

Hazarika held meetings with officials of all three departments after assuming office.

This is Hazarika's second term as Assam Minister. He had earlier served as the Minister of State for Health and Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Urban Development except for Town and Country Planning in the Sarbananda Sonowal-led NDA government.
