GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the government would not tolerate ragging in any college or university and would not spare anyone indulging in ragging.
The Chief Minister expressed utmost dissatisfaction at the ragging incident at Dibrugarh University. He said, "It's the failure of the University authorities in their fight against ragging. Today's Cabinet meeting also expressed dissatisfaction over the Dibrugarh University ragging incident. The Cabinet requested the police to apprehend the absconding accused."
The Chief Minister said, "Reports from various sources suggest that the university authority is trying to hush up the issue. If that is true, Dibrugarh University authorities will come under the ambit of the police investigation. The government will not spare anyone. Maybe, the police may arrest a few university persons."
The Assam Legislative Assembly passed an anti-ragging law in 1999. The law has powered college and university authorities to check ragging on campus. According to the law, every college or university must have an anti-ragging committee. The law empowers the committee to investigate ragging incidents, expel culprits and even lodge complaints with the police. However, no such committee has taken the law seriously, leading to ragging in most colleges and universities. While some students tolerate the ragging, some do not. After the Dibrugarh University incident, many students came out from different colleges openly for being victims of ragging.
The Chief Minister said that the government would bear the entire cost of treatment for the injured student, Ananda Sarma.
Ananda Sarma said from the hospital 'those who ragged me are not pardonable. However, I don't want the disastrous end of any student's career."
