GUWAHATI: There is good news for residents of north Assam, including Majuli and Lakhimpur, as work on the long-desired Majuli-Bongalmara Road and Four-lane Bridge project will start from Sunday, December 11.
According to government sources, the foundation of the externally-aided project will be laid in Majuli under the 'Bikaxor Babae Aeta Poxex' (Fortnight for Development). Surface communication between Majuli and Lakhimpur will be facilitated once the road and bridge project is completed. The project will also facilitate travel of tourists etc., between Majuli and Arunachal Pradesh.
The state PWD recently issued the work order for the much-needed project to SP Singla Constructions Pvt Ltd, which was the lowest bidder in the tender process. This company is also executing the Guwahati-North Guwahati six-lane bridge project over the river Brahmaputra.
According to PWD sources, the construction work of the project entails improvement and upgradation of the road from Balichapori, Majuli to Bongalmara, Lakhimpur, including the construction of two major four-lane bridges over the rivers Subansiri and Luit. The road portion of the project is of two lanes.
Against the estimated project cost of Rs 785.364 crore, the award cost is around Rs 694.77 crore, the sources said. The entire stretch from Balichapori in Majuli to Bongalmara in Lakhimpur is around 19 km. The length of the bridge over the river Subansiri will be 2 km and the one over the river Luit will be 702 metres, the sources added.
