World Heritage site: UNESCO to evaluate Charaideo Maidam in October

GUWAHATI: An expert team from UNESCO will arrive in the state in the first week of October to evaluate Charaideo Maidam, a spot nominated for World Heritage Site status.

The Government of India sent details of Charaideo Maidam as the lone nomination from the country for UNESCO World Heritage status in January this year. The State Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, took the initiative.

The UNESCO team will visit the site and compare it with the dossier that the Government of India sent to the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. According to sources, top officials of the State Government and officials of the ASI (Archaeological Survey of India) will accompany the UNESCO team.

At present, works concerning conservation, excavation, beautification, and development of roads are going on at the site. The Directorate of Archaeology that prepared the dossier for the World Heritage Site claim is taking the lead.

According to Directorate of Archaeology sources, the next conference of UNESCO will be in June-July next year. The possibility of placing the claim of Charaideo at the conference looms large.
